- CCD done in a classroom model with each grade being seperated and learning a different topic (i.e. 9th grade - Jesus; 10th grade - Church History)
- Catholic School kids where not interested in any CCD programing at parish because it was a once a week model of what they receive at school all week
- CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) ends up being more of the "youth group" and leans more towards social and service activities
- Overall in this model there can be a seperation of programing and a seperation of the youth and parents involved
- In 1976 The USCCB publised A Vision of Youth Ministry; In 1997 The USCCB approved Renewing the Vision which is a blueprint of youth ministry
- The USCCB called for comprehensive and holistic youth minsitry. CYO seemed to causual; CCD to formal.
- The "Twice a week" Model has all 9th-12th together and they learn the same lesson in a large group but break up into small groups for grade appropriate material. One of the days has more people and is more evangelization trying to reach out and catechize, while the second of the days is a smaller more intimate group which focuses more on discipleship and taking the discussion / topic deeper. Instead of there being three groups / three programs, there is now one program open to ALL.
- LIFE TEEN uses a one a week model meeting after Mass, usually on Sunday Nights. The once a week, like the twice a week model has ALL 9th-12th meet together in large group and learn the same lesson then break into small groups to discuss the topic at a grade appropriate level.
- LIFE TEEN modeled their program after the structure of the Mass (Gather, Proclaim, Break and Send Forth)
- The Challenge of a once a week program is for the director and core team to keep a good balance between the casualness of CYO and the formalness of CCD. If the nights become to "fun" or causual then people say it is not deep enough and lacks substance but if it is "too deep" then youth are sometimes turned off.
- Almost every LIFE TEEN program and or program using a LIFE TEEN once a week model ends up needed a second "night" in which the youth can "go deeper", a small group for more serious discussion and discipleship. XLT is an example of this.
- These are the 8 components of Renewing the Vision. Basically whatever model of youth ministry, the model must be compatiable and implement the 8 components.
- The Target model is a list of priorities (the Tree model is also a list of priorities)
- Forming the Core Team (Adults) is primary and then formation and guidance of the Youth Leader (Formation before programing)
- The 3rd ring is the parish programing (i.e. once a week model or twice a week model) - OLD CCD
- The 4th ring are events sponsored by the parish but done usually outside the parish (retreats, pilgrimages, social and service events) - OLD CYO
- The 5th ring are all events done outside the parish, going out to the youth and meeting them on their turf. Many groups like "Young Life" form their team and then solely work in the 5th ring. It is in the 5th ring that "relational youth minsitry" takes place.
- The goal of forming disciples and life long parishioners is one in which the youth are drawning from ring 5 to 4; 4 to 3 and so on until they are mentored into a leadership role and then those that have been evangelized become the evangelizers.
- Fraternus puts a stress on formation before programing with two groups of leaders (Captains and Missionaries). Captain's serve at the parish, while missionaries go out into the schools and lead home groups.
- Fraternus is balanced between three areas of programing. Parish (Frat Night); Community (Home Group, Prayer / Lunch at Schools); and Events (Excursions and Summer Ranch). Frat Night would be ring 3; Excusions and Ranch, ring 4 and Home Group would count as ring 3 or 5 depending on the nature of the group. Is the home group geared more toward discipleship, or more toward evangelization and outreach.
- Fraternus only lacks a catechetical elements so it would need to be placed in a parish in which a strong Catechetical / CCD program exits. At a parish it is almost the CYO / CCD model. Fraternus being a very comprehensive and holistic CYO along side a solid CCD program. To be effective and fit into Renewing the Vision the two programs would need to act as "two lungs" but one organ.
- Fraternus utilized two new approaches to youth ministry. One, they focus solely on males and two, they put a priority on relationship ministry going out into the homes, schools and community.
- The 2-3 Model. There are two levels (Formation and Programing) with three elements in each level. The priority is formation before programing so the first level takes first priority. Formation covers rings 1 and 2. There are three groups being formed. Catechists serve at parish, Missionaries serve in the homes, schools and community, Youth Leaders serve both in the parish and outside the parish as peer leaders.
- Programing also has three elements. There are the parish catechetical programs (Confirmation Preperation, Catechesis for youth; Parent's First for parents). These weekly programs at the parish are in ring 3. There are non-parish programs which focus on evangelization and outreach in the homes, schools and community. These are in ring 5. Home groups can be considered ring 3 or 5 depending on whether they are founded for discipleship or for evangelization / outreach. Youth Activities such as pilgrimages, retreats, social and service events can either be at the parish or outside of the parish but hosted by the parish, these are in ring 4 and have all three leader groups jointly organizing and implementing them.
- Link to Liturgy by Remnant Resource can be used in both the Catechetical Programs (Youth and Parents and the Home Groups) as well as a resource to form the three part Core Team.
